2012 AECT International Convention - Visit to Louisville

The 2012 AECT International Convention planning team made a short (2 day) site visit to Louisville, KY in December 2011. We made visits to the Muhammad Ali Center, the Louisville Science Center, and marvelous attractions on Museum Row on Main. Prior to our tour of Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, we seized the opportunity to have our photo taken in front of the world’s largest baseball bat. The Galt House Hotel (our convention venue) was beautifully decorated for the holidays. Walking through the hotel and checking-out the rooms needed for our concurrent sessions, panels, roundtables, and poster sessions, brought back many fond memories from our 2009 convention at the Galt House. As a matter of fact, I still remembered many of the rooms and the presenters who used them (shades of Simonides and Method of Loci, I suppose?).

Speaking of rooms, staying at the Galt House also refreshed my memory about the spacious guest rooms in the Galt House. Not only are the guest rooms large (most notably the reasonably-priced suites), but they are also impeccably clean and comfortable. Hint: If you have some additional funds for your stay in Louisville, be sure to pay a little extra for a suite; it’s worth the price.

On the planning end of things, our 2012 convention planning team (consisting of planners from divisions, affiliates, committees, and other partners) started working the last day of our Jacksonville convention and has already met via Adobe Connect. Division/affiliate descriptions have been updated and the All-Academic proposal submission site is up and running. Soon, I hope you will take some time to prepare and submit a proposal (or two). Doing so will reduce your stress as the March 2 closing date approaches. More importantly, getting your proposals submitted well in advance will reduce MY stress (and high blood pressure) as I wait for all of those last minute submissions. I'm excited about our 2012 convention. Let's knock it out of the park!

A list of groups is available on the call for proposals, describing particular topics suggested by each group and identifying the planner for each group.

2011 AECT Convention Update

Last week, AECT leadership (board members, division leaders, ect foundation leaders, and AECT staff) gathered in Jacksonville, FL (site of our 2011 AECT International Convention) for our summer leadership conference. After two full days of productive meetings, planning opportunities, and enriching leadership development sessions, we all left refreshed, recharged, and ready to prepare for our upcoming convention in Jacksonville, FL, November 8 - 12, 2011. AECT President-Elect and 2011 Convention Chair Ana Donaldson and our numerous planners have put together an outstanding convention for us all!

Now, some comments about Jacksonville and the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront (our convention hotel)-

As the name suggests, The Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront sits along the St. Johns River in the center of Jacksonville's business and entertainment district. Less than a block away from the hotel (along the riverwalk) is Jacksonville Landing, where you will find several places for dining and entertainment. On the other side of the river (a drive across the bridge or a short water taxi ride away - around $3 one-way) you can find some other fine dining opportunities at the Chart-House, Ruth's Chris, and Morton's Steakhouse (to name a few).

Overall, we were impressed by The Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront. The hotel staff, food, fitness center, roof top pool, and meeting rooms were all exceptional. Of special note was the friendliness of the hotel management and staff. I am sure that they will be just as welcoming when you arrive in November. Parking in garage attached to the Hyatt is $15 per day (with some other hourly and daily lots nearby).
A taxi from the Jacksonville Airport will run between $35 and $40. Shuttles are also available, but they run about $20 per person.

With an AECT room rate of only $135 per night, almost half of our allotted rooms are already booked. So, get your reservations in soon and take advantage of our special rate. Yes, there are other hotels in the area (mostly across the river), but your stay will not be nearly as convenient as it will be if you stay at the Hyatt.

2011 Dean and Sybil McClusky Research Award

The ECT Foundation's Dean and Sybil McClusky Research Award is presented to honor the most outstanding doctoral research proposal in educational technology, as selected by a jury of researchers from the Research and Theory Division of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT).

The awardee receives a cash award of $500 with a plaque of achievement presented during the awards ceremony at the 2011 annual convention to be held November 8-12, 2011, Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront in Jacksonville, Florida.

Background

F. Dean McClusky was a professor of education at the University of California, Los Angeles. A prolific writer and researcher in the educational communications and technology field, he established his reputation with publications such as Audio-Visual Teaching Techniques, the A-V Bibliography (1950) which contained more than three thousand references to literature dealing with the use of audio-visual materials and techniques in education, and The Audio-Visual Reader (1954), a collection of readings in the visual education field co-edited with James S. Kinder, who was the coordinator of AV Services at San Diego State College. McClusky's wife, Sybil Kemp McClusky, working as his editorial assistant, offered constructive criticism and proofread manuscripts.

In 1976 the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) posthumously awarded McClusky its Distinguished Service Award, recognizing his outstanding leadership in advancing the theory and practice of educational communications and technology over a substantial period of time. The Dean and Sybil McClusky Research Award for an outstanding doctoral research proposal was established with funds donated to the ECT Foundation by Dean and Sybil McClusky, an expression of their commitment to the future leaders of the field.

Criteria:

Submitted proposals may follow acceptable formats of individual schools but must include at least:

The definition of the problem including a statement of significance.
A review of pertinent literature.
Research hypothesis to be examined.
Research design and procedures including statistical techniques.
Applicants are encouraged to review pages 157-161 of Isaac, Stephen and Michaels, William B., Handbook in Research and Evaluation, Robert R. Knapp, San Diego, CA 1971.

Applicants must be presently enrolled in a doctoral program in educational technology and have obtained committee acceptance of their proposal.

Intention Statement:

The winner will be expected to sign a statement of the effect that he/she will complete the proposed doctoral study in accordance with the sponsoring university's graduate school policies (including any time limitations) or be required to return the award received.

Submission Procedure:

Prepare a cover letter that briefly discuss the background of your research project and include both yours and you advisor's contact information. Your proposal must be within 2000 words. The title page and the references are not included in this word count. Make sure that you address the criteria for this award in your proposal.

Represents the Research and Theory Division on the AECT Board and report to all division officers

President

The position of the President is a four-year commitment. Once elected, the person in this role will serve as President-Elect Designate, President-Elect, President, and Past President. Within each one year position, the responsibilities are as follows:

President-Elect Designate

The President-Elect Designate is elected prior to the annual convention in which he or she becomes the President-Elect. This position is elected prior to the convention so that he or she can become oriented to the activities of Research and Theory Division and the other members of the division board. The President-Elect Designate assists the President-Elect with conference planning and program proposal evaluation.

President-Elect

Chairs the division convention planning activities while serving on the overall AECT Convention Planning Committee

President

Conducts all business, meetings, and other tasks relating to division activity within AECT and submits semi annual report to AECT Executive Board.

Past President

I hope those of you who attended last week's convention in Anaheim had an enriching experience and an uneventful return home. I know that I always return, invigorated with new ideas and feeling refreshed from catching-up with my long-time colleagues and meeting many new friends. I would like to extend a special thank you to those who presented as a part of our Research and Theory
Division program. In addition, I hope those of you who were unable to attend in Anaheim can join us next year in Jacksonville, Florida.

Call for the 2010 AECT Early Career Faculty Symposium: Due September 1, 2010

AECT’s Research and Theory Division will be hosting the 2010 Early Career Symposium sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The symposium will be held at the annual AECT International Conference on October 26-27th, 2010, in Anaheim, California. The symposium will engage participants in a day and a half of focused career mentoring and networking.

The symposium will provide each participant with the following:
- AECT Conference registration fee
- conference travel expenses up to $500
- two community building lunches
- lodging for the AECT conference not to exceed $200/night for the duration of the conference

The intended outcomes of the Early Career Symposium include:
- mentoring of early career faculty and advanced doctoral students into the social/professional network as partners in idea-making,
- supporting early career faculty and advanced doctoral students in developing viable technology-oriented research agendas,
- providing specific feedback and guidance to early career faculty and advanced doctoral students about their research agendas,
- providing information about building a research agenda, pursuing funding, and building collaborations,
- developing a community of researchers interested in ways technology can transform teaching and learning

The Symposium will occur over a day and a half as part of the AECT Annual Meeting. On the first day, the mentors will work with their primary team of participants (6 participants per mentor) for much of the day. Then, on the half-day, they will talk to other participant groups so that each participant gets some personal feedback from at least two mentors. Participants in the symposium will be asked to identify a project to work on in consultation with their mentors over the following year. Participants will participant in a follow-up video conference Spring 2011.

Our model for the Early Career Symposium relies on three groups of people working together to create a supportive community. Participants will be assigned to one of three mentors. Each of these mentors is a mid-career faculty member who has a strong record of scholarship and grant activity.

Early Career Faculty Participants
Nine early career faculty applicants will be selected through a competitive application process. The symposium is focused on faculty members who have received their terminal degree in the last five years. Preference will be given to those faculty members who are not at research-intensive schools as they typically have fewer opportunities for mentoring at their home institutions than faculty in research-intensive positions. Three early career faculty will be assigned to each mentor.

Advanced Doctoral Students
Nine advanced doctoral student applicants will be selected through a competitive application process. Students should be in the final stages of completing their degree. Preference will be given to students who are nearing completion and whose research agendas align to the technology in teaching and learning focus of the Symposium. Three early doctoral students will be assigned to each mentor.

Lunch for both days will be provided as part of the Symposium to offer an opportunity for unstructured conversation among all participants. Given that one of our desired outcomes is the development of a community of researchers, providing opportunities for that community to develop is a critical aspect of the experience.

Eligibility
- Applicants must be AECT Members in good standing
- Applicants must have not participated in a previous year’s symposium
- Applicants must be current faculty (within first five years of career) or graduate students (within one year of finishing doctoral degree)
- Applicants will be selected based upon their strength of argument for participation. Additionally, the Symposium board seeks to accept a diverse group of scholars representing the entirety of the membership of AECT.

Application
Faculty applicants should submit:

* Cover letter providing a career statement as well as discussing why they would like to attend the Early Career Symposium, how they are qualified and how it would benefit their careers (letter should be limited to a single page).
* Updated Curriculum Vita

Student applicants should submit:

* Cover Letter discussing career goals, including description of dissertation and progress toward completion. The cover letter should also discuss how they are qualified for the Early Career Symposium and how it would benefit their careers (letter should be limited to a single page)
* Updated Curriculum Vita
* Statement supporting participation from dissertation advisor (limit to one paragraph)

Deadline: All applicants are due September 1, 2010. Cover letters and vita’s must be sent to Symposium coordinator, David Richard Moore (moored3@ohio.edu). All materials must be sent electronically. Applicants will be informed of their status on September 21, 2010.

Call for Facilitators

Dear Colleague:

The Research and Theory Division is recruiting facilitators for the AECT 2010 Convention sessions to be given this October in Anaheim, CA. Facilitators for each one-hour session are essential to ensure the quality of our division’s sessions, since they monitor presenter time usage and ensure that all presenters benefit from audience evaluations. I am writing to request your participation as a facilitator for our division.

The facilitators for each Research and Theory Division session (which feature from one to three presentations each) are tasked with introducing the speakers, collecting evaluations, and communicating with the presenters prior to the conference. Facilitators prepare for their jobs by reading each of the proposal abstracts (700-1000) for their assigned session in advance of the session, so that they can give a brief introduction (<5 minutes) while the presenters are setting up. Facilitators also contact the presenters about 1 month prior to the conference to confirm their participation and the day and time for the presentations, to request or provide any additional information, and to do any additional session coordination that might be necessary. At the beginning of each one-hour session, the facilitators pass out evaluation forms to the audience and then collect the evaluations at the conclusion each presentation.

This year, the Research and Theory Division will have several themed sessions on the following topics:

In addition to the roundtables, reflection papers, and “stand-alone” concurrent sessions, the Research and Theory Division is also sponsoring several other special sessions.

To help with coordination of the themed sessions, I will supply you with the email addresses and proposal abstracts for ALL session presenters. If you’re interested in serving the division in the capacity of facilitator, please email Zeni Colorado at jcolorad@emporia.edu with 1) the number of hour-long sessions you would be willing to facilitate, and 2) if you have a theme preference. Please also provide me with a list of any other obligations you might have during the conference (include the names of any presentations, meetings, luncheons, etc.). I’ll do my best to honor your theme requests and avoid any conflicts with your other obligations.

Dean and Sybil McClusky Research Award

The awardee receives a cash award of $500 with a plaque of achievement presented during the awards ceremony at the 2010 annual convention to be held October 26-30, 2010 at Hyatt Regency Orange County, Anaheim, California.

Background

F. Dean McClusky was a professor of education at the University of California, Los Angeles. A prolific writer and researcher in the educational communications and technology field, he established his reputation with publications such as Audio-Visual Teaching Techniques, the A-V Bibliography (1950) which contained more than three thousand references to literature dealing with the use of audio-visual materials and techniques in education, and The Audio-Visual Reader (1954), a collection of readings in the visual education field co-edited with James S. Kinder, who was the coordinator of AV Services at San Diego State College. McClusky's wife, Sybil Kemp McClusky, working as his editorial assistant, offered constructive criticism and proofread manuscripts.

In 1976 the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) posthumously awarded McClusky its Distinguished Service Award, recognizing his outstanding leadership in advancing the theory and practice of educational communications and technology over a substantial period of time. The Dean and Sybil McClusky Research Award for an outstanding doctoral research proposal was established with funds donated to the ECT Foundation by Dean and Sybil McClusky, an expression of their commitment to the future leaders of the field.

Criteria:

Submitted proposals may follow acceptable formats of individual schools but must include at least:

The definition of the problem including a statement of significance.
A review of pertinent literature.
Research hypothesis to be examined.
Research design and procedures including statistical techniques.

Applicants are encouraged to review pages 157-161 of Isaac, Stephen and Michaels, William B., Handbook in Research and Evaluation, Robert R. Knapp, San Diego, CA 1971.

Applicants must be presently enrolled in a doctoral program in educational technology and have obtained committee acceptance of their proposal.

Intention Statement:

The winner will be expected to sign a statement of the effect that he/she will complete the proposed doctoral study in accordance with the sponsoring university's graduate school policies (including any time limitations) or be required to return the award received.

Submission Procedure:

Prepare a cover letter that briefly discuss the background of your research project and include both yours and you advisor's contact information. Your proposal must be within 2000 words. The title page and the references are not included in this word count. Make sure that you address the criteria for this award in your proposal.

The deadline for submissions to AECT 2009 has been changed. Convention proposals are being accepted until midnight February 16th. This year we encourage authors to submit their work in the following categories:
Category 1: Completed Study - Report findings from a study that is complete.
Category 2: Work in Progress - Report the progress of a study currently underway.
Category 3: Research Methodology - Report research methodologies that are interesting to the AECT community.

Authors can submit their work in any of the above categories that fit the interest of the R&T division interest, conference theme, and conference subthemes. We welcome proposals that fit the 3 categories in the traditional paper presentation format as well as the special features of this conference:

. Reflection papers
. Interactive workshops.

Invitation To Present

As a premier professional organization in the field of teaching, learning, and technology, AECT actively fosters the dissemination of pertinent research findings. In order to encourage a greater number of high-quality research paper presentations at our annual convention, the Research & Theory offers Feature Research Paper sessions for data-based research studies.

The Sessions

On each of the three days of concurrent sessions of the Louisville Convention (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday), one 60-minute session will be devoted to presentation and discussion of two Featured Research papers. These sessions will be highlighted in the program.
Each presenter will have 15 minutes to present a paper, followed by 5 minutes of question-and-answer with attendees. The discussant will have 15 minutes to offer a critique, comments, and synthesis of the papers followed by discussion.

Nature of the Studies

Featured Research papers will describe recently completed research studies that have not been published in a journal article nor presented at a conference.
These papers may describe studies that were primarily quantitative, qualitative or that involved the use of mixed methods.
In all cases, the studies must have involved the collection of data. Historical research, reviews of the literature (other than meta-analyses), papers describing theories unaccompanied by data, and other non-data-based papers will not be considered for this special strand. (This is not intended to devalue such research, however. It simply means such work does not meet the targeted goal for this year's Featured Research papers.)
Studies must have already been conducted and the data already analyzed at the time a proposal is submitted.

Submission Differences

Submission Deadline:February 14th, 2009. You must submit your proposal using the online submission form. Make sure you identify your proposal as being for a Featured Research paper. Read the guidelines for electronic submissions.
Enter your proposal in the online proposal form, following the directions provided. After you submit your proposal, you will receive electronic notification that it has been received. The peer review process begins shortly after the submission deadline.

Notification of Acceptance as a Featured Research Paper

Authors of accepted Featured Research papers must submit their full papers to their discussant/facilitator by midnight September 1, 2009. Authors who fail to submit their paper by this deadline will not be allowed to present their paper at the conference and will not appear in the convention program as a Featured Research paper.

Papers not accepted for Featured Research will be forwarded to an appropriate division for consideration.

Given the concentrated effort and commitment of a large number of people that goes into one being accepted into the Featured Research Program, presenters should make certain they can attend. Since there are limited slots for the Featured Research Papers in Louisville 2009. It would be a shame to have fewer people present.

As is true for all convention presentations, presenters must obtain written permission to use copyrighted photos, music, and the like in their sessions. Funding

The Research and Theory division promotes the development and advancement of theory; promotes, presents, and disseminates rigorous research and scholarship; advocates the study of social and cultural issues in the field; and supports, fosters, and mentors emerging scholars. Any studies that embody excellent research methods in any area of interest to AECT members could be appropriate for submission to R&T. Topics such as the relationship between research and theory, promising research methods, ethical considerations in research, challenges associated with conducting research with data from web-based sources such as blogs, and the position of Educational Technology as a field in the context of related fields such as the Learning Sciences, Cognitive Science, Psychology, etc., might be of particular interest to R&T division members.??

This year we encourage authors to submit their work in the following categories:

Category 1: Completed Study
Report findings from a study that is complete

Category 2: Work in Progress
Report the progress of a study currently underway

Category 3: Research Methodology
Report research methodologies that are interesting to the AECT community.

Authors can submit their work in any of the above categories that fit the interest of the R&T division interest, conference theme, and conference subthemes. When submitting your proposal, please state in the abstract which category you are submitting your work. For example, "this proposal reports a Category 1 Completed Study on..," "this proposal reports a Category 2 Work in Progress on..," or "this proposal reports a Category 3 Research Methodology on.."

We welcome proposals that fit the 3 categories in the traditional paper presentation format as well as the special features of this conference that include:

. Reflection papers
. Interactive workshops

Proposal Process
All proposals must be submitted electronically (see Proposal Submission Process, below) to one primary AECT division or affiliated organization for consideration. Guidelines and principles posted at www.aect.org will assist in preparing proposals for submission. Presenters are expected to follow the AECT Code of Ethics, available at http://www.aect.org/About/Ethics.asp.

Presenters are limited to making no more than two (2) concurrent session presentations as key/first presenters during the convention. That is, proposers must select one division or affiliate to receive their proposal and not submit the same proposal (or one that is largely the same) to any other division or affiliate. Each division/affiliate has a Convention Planner (usually the President-Elect). If a Convention Planner and/or the peer review panel feel a proposal is not well suited to their division/affiliate, they may recommend it for consideration by another division/affiliate. This will occur without action by the proposer. In addition, a person may propose no more than two concurrent session presentations on which he or she is key presenter, although that individual may be a co-presenter on other proposals and may propose roundtables/poster presentations.

The intent of (1) not allowing submission of the same (or a very closely related) proposal to more than one division and (2) limiting the number of presentations on which a person may be key presenter is to assure a diverse program in which many strong presentations are included and little duplication occurs.

Informal Learning: A Discussion with George Strawn; NSF CIO
Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1:00-2:00; Cambridge Room

This discussion will address the potential impact of the informal learning on the formal learning process and visions for the future directions. The National Science Foundation supports many initiatives that study with informal learning settings. These settings offer fewer constraints for the use of emergent technologies but can be adapted to learning objectives. NSF is averaging around $17 million per year on interactive systems for learning. How do gaming, virtual environments or other interactive environments affect informal learning? Join Keynote speak, George Strawn, to discuss the impact of these new ways of learning.

Hello AECT Research and Theory Members-
The Research and Theory division promotes the development and advancement of theory; promotes, presents, and disseminates research and scholarship that encompasses multiple perspectives; advocates the study of social and cultural issues in the field; supports, fosters, and mentors emerging scholars.

R&T will be sponsoring 46 concurrent, roundtable, and poster sessions plus a special presidential sessions at the 2008 annual conference in Orlando. Below are some activities I'm sure you'll want to attend:

-On Wednesday evening, be sure to check out the R&T table at the Welcome Reception. After the reception, the division leadership will be hosting a dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. For those of you interested in reserving a spot for dinner, please email David Moore at moored3@ohio.edu.

-On Thursday morning (8:00 AM - 9:00 AM) be sure to attend the R&T sponsored presidential session. 'Putting the "Public" ; Back in Publication: A Call for Design Research in Educational Technology'This presentation is a call for action in the educational technology research community to adopt design research methods more widely so that the public good realized from our research increases to a socially responsible level. Specific strategies for engaging faculty members, doctoral students and practitioners in design research agendas will be described. Special Research and Theory Division/Presidential Sponsored Session, Presented by: Thomas Reeves, University of Georgia

-On Thursday (11:45am-12:45pm) be sure to attend the R&D/D&D Luncheon where our division will present their annual awards recognizing outstanding achievements in the instructional design and research fields. Tickets are required and can be purchased when you register or at the conference.

- On Thursday (3:30pm-4:30pm) join us for the R&T membership meeting. This is a great opportunity to get involved and shape the future of the division.

Mark your calendars for 6:30-7:30pm on October 25 to attend the NSF Research Symposium panel discussion. "Prospects for Federally Funded Research." This session is open to anyone attending the AECT conference.

In the session, our five panelists will share their experiences in writing and securing funding from federal sources. We are very pleased with our panel of experts as they bring a wide variety of expertise and experience to us from within the field of IT and closely related fields.
